Globalization and its Effect on Cultural Diversity

"The discourse regarding the effects of globalization on cultural diversity is a challenging debate. The advancement of technology dissolves international boundaries and opens cultures to a whole new arena (Smith, 2000), enabling globalization to occur. Globalization can be an empowering entity. It can interconnect the world, support economic development, provide information availability and assist in developing a global village (Moahi, 2007)."

"There is a paradoxical dichotomy, a tangible undercurrent, when it comes to globalization and cultural diversity. On one hand, globalization has the potential to mobilize and empower people, provide a means for self-representation, support a collective identity through socialization and provide employment opportunities. On the other hand, it has the ability to disempower people by misrepresentation, provide a process for further colonization, and propel the loss of individualism and self and group identity."

The Golden Records

The Voyager Golden Records are two phonograph records that were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977 by NASA. The records contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. Those records are considered as a sort of a time capsule.

About Anthems

"An anthem is a musical composition of celebration, usually used as a symbol for a distinct group, particularly the national anthems of countries."

"Anthem is derived from the Greek ἀντίφωνα (antíphōna) via Old English antefn. Both words originally referred to antiphons, a call-and-response style of singing."

"The word "anthem" is commonly used to describe any celebratory song or composition for a distinct group, as in national anthems. Many pop songs are used as sports anthems, notably including Queen's "We Are the Champions" and "We Will Rock You", and some sporting events have their own anthems, most notably including UEFA Champions League. Further, some songs are artistically styled as anthems, whether or not they are used as such, including Marilyn Manson's "Irresponsible Hate Anthem", Silverchair's "Anthem for the Year 2000", and Toto's "Child's Anthem"."

Blurry Identities lives on!

After a few months off, we have put together a new plan for a performance. This time in Amsterdam, the city where Joao proudly lives.

We want to research further what we worked on in Unfurling. Since then, many things have changed in the world: Brexit, Donald Trump's Presidency, Geert Wilders proximity, etc. How can we implement some of this elements in our project? Elements that influence so much how culture is perceived.

We are very happy to announce that we were given support by the Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst!

Stay tuned for what is to come!
